How Opal Mehta Got Kissed, Got Wild, and Got A Life: A Novel by Kaavya Viswanathan
My rating: 2 of 5 stars
The starting was good enough. It's about an Indian girl in new jersey whose only goal since she was born was to get admitted in Harvard. With support of her parents (who feed her obsession by making chalking out strategies, goals, making lists, setting deadlines etc) she acquires every other thing she thinks might let her into Harvard. But she is disappointed after her first interview with Dean Anderson who tells her that she needed to get a life(indicating a lack of social interaction and romance in her life). She is asked to reapply again after the graduation.i am disappointed in the story after that. It book turns into a typical "girly"stuff (fashion, boys, makeup, television soaps) when opal follows a plan chalked out by her parents. It is named HOWGAL(how opal will get a life) and consist of three goals for Opal1.to be in the group of most popular girls in school2.to get kissed3.to get wildsomehow i dragged myself to the end of this book, listlessly reading Opal's transformation into a hot chic and detaching herself from the group of geeks where she once belonged. She doesn't enjoy the process but keeps reminding that this is all for Harvard. i think the story is much better in the end when she realizes Harvard isn't everything and most important thing for anyone is to be happy doing whatever they really want to do.
